Garage Shops FAQs

Common questions about using Garage Shops to sell, give away and find household items locally.

1. What is Garage Shops?

Garage Shops is a free local platform where people can create their own Garage Shop, list items for sale, give items away for free, or post wanted listings for things they are looking for.

2. Is Garage Shops free?

Yes. Garage Shops is currently free to use. Paid features may be added later, but the basic ability to create a Garage Shop and add listings remains free.

3. What types of listings can I add?

Garage Shop owners can add items for sale, items they want to give away for free, and wanted listings for items they are looking to obtain.

4. How many listings can I add?

Each Garage Shop can currently have up to 50 active listings across all three sections: For Sale, Free and Wanted.

5. Is my phone number or address shown publicly?

No. Your phone number, email address and home address are not publicly displayed on Garage Shops. Other users submit their contact details first, and you decide who to contact.

6. How do people respond to my listings?

Visitors can open a listing and submit their name, phone number and an optional message. Their details are sent privately to the Garage Shop owner.

7. How do wanted listings work?

A wanted listing allows you to describe an item you are looking for and enter the amount you are willing to pay. Other users can respond if they have a suitable item available.

8. Does Garage Shops handle payments?

No. Garage Shops does not handle payments, delivery, collection, inspections or disputes. Users make all arrangements directly between themselves.

9. What happens when a listing is completed?

Items for sale can be marked as sold, free items can be marked as taken, and wanted listings can be marked as found. Listings can also be removed from the Manage Listings page.

10. Do listings expire?

Yes. Active listings currently expire after 90 days unless they are updated or relisted.

11. Can businesses use Garage Shops?

Yes. Businesses are welcome to use Garage Shops, although the platform is primarily designed for local household listings. Businesses that provide local services and are looking to increase their online visibility may also benefit from BizSnippet , our Australian business directory.

12. What should I do if I do not receive a response?

While we encourage Garage Shop owners to respond to enquiries, a response is not guaranteed. The listing may no longer be available, or the owner may have already made arrangements with someone else.

13. Can I add any type of listing?

Users must comply with Australian laws and regulations. Garage Shops may remove listings that are illegal, unsafe, misleading, inappropriate or prohibited by the platform.

14. Why can I only upload one image per listing?

Garage Shops is intended to feel more like a simple local garage sale than a complicated marketplace. One image keeps listings quick to create, uncluttered and easy to browse.

15. Is an image required for every listing?

An image is required for items listed for sale and items being given away for free. Images are optional for wanted listings, although an example image may help other users understand what you are looking for.

16. What does Address Verified mean?

Address Verified means Garage Shops mailed a six-digit verification code to the private postal address registered for that Garage Shop, and the correct code was entered on the website.

The Garage Shop owner’s street address remains private and is never shown publicly.

17. Does verification guarantee that a user or listing is trustworthy?

No. Address verification only confirms that the Garage Shop owner received mail at the registered address. It does not verify a person’s identity, honesty, items, prices, payments, condition of goods or any transaction.

Users should still make their own checks and take reasonable care when buying, selling, collecting or responding to listings.

18. What happens if a verified Garage Shop changes its address?

Changing the registered street address, suburb, state or postcode removes the Address Verified status. The Garage Shop owner must complete the postal verification process again for the new address.

19. What should I do if I forget my password?

Select “Forgot your password?” on the Login page and enter the email address registered to your Garage Shops account.

If an account exists for that email address, Garage Shops will send a secure password-reset link. The link expires after one hour and can only be used once.

20. I did not receive my password-reset email. What should I do?

Check your spam or junk folder and make sure you entered the same email address used when creating your account.

For privacy and security, Garage Shops displays the same confirmation message whether or not an account exists for the email address entered. You may submit another reset request if needed.

21. What happens if my Garage Shop is removed?

Garage Shops may remove Garage Shops that breach our Terms & Privacy conditions, contain prohibited content, provide false information, are used for spam, or otherwise create risk for the platform or its users.

Where practical, Garage Shops may contact the account holder regarding the issue. Removal decisions are at the discretion of Garage Shops.

22. What happens if one of my listings is removed?

Garage Shops may remove listings that are illegal, unsafe, misleading, fraudulent, offensive, prohibited by law, or otherwise inconsistent with the purpose of the platform.

Repeated breaches may result in further action, including removal of a Garage Shop or account.

23. Can I advertise pets or live animals?

No. Garage Shops does not permit the sale, giveaway, adoption or wanted listings for pets, livestock, birds, reptiles, fish or any other live animals.

Animal sales and transfers are subject to various Australian laws, regulations and welfare requirements. Garage Shops does not operate as an animal marketplace.
